Sustainability is undoubtedly one of the most important issues that have occupied our agenda in recent years...
It is very promising that this issue is especially on the agenda of institutions and that sustainability awareness is increasing. We witness that sustainability studies are gaining momentum every day and the concrete outcomes of these studies. All these efforts are of course very valuable, but I would like to share an observation on the subject; When sustainability is mentioned, the first and perhaps only thing that comes to mind is environmental sustainability.
However, sustainability is a much broader concept that includes social, economic and institutional dimensions beyond the environmental dimension.
Addressing sustainability only with environmental factors seems to be an obstacle to fully realizing sustainability goals. Therefore, I think that addressing the issue in a way that includes its social, economic and institutional dimensions can make it easier to both understand the concept better and put forward a holistic sustainability strategy.
Let the pain be very good
If we consider the different dimensions of sustainability, I think the most important one is "social sustainability". Social sustainability includes the development of systems that will meet the needs of society, support social justice and increase social welfare. Issues such as reducing inequalities, access to health services, educational opportunities, and job security are fundamental issues in terms of social sustainability and are very important for all of us in terms of improving our quality of life. Elements such as protection of human rights, diversity and inclusion are indispensable for social sustainability.
"Economic sustainability" comes second. The economic dimension of sustainability includes creating economic systems that can meet the needs of future generations. Economic sustainability means that an economic system uses resources efficiently, sustains long-term growth and prosperity, reduces income inequalities, and preserves resources to meet the needs of future generations. Economic sustainability means more than just focusing on the goal of economic growth; therefore, it must be addressed together with environmental and social sustainability. Because, as we all unfortunately frequently witness, acting solely with the goal of economic growth leads to depletion of natural resources, environmental problems and social imbalances. Elements such as sustainable business models, efficient use of resources, green economy and renewable energy play an important role in ensuring economic sustainability.
Corporate sustainability requires companies to focus on ethical values, transparency, accountability and long-term success. It covers topics such as sustainable business practices, corporate governance, supply chain management and stakeholder relations. Accordingly, I would like to underline that companies that claim sustainability must fulfill their social responsibilities and create a business structure that is not only profit-oriented but also takes environmental and social impacts into consideration.
